What do you have to offer?
Equine Adventures offers a 2 hour guided tour to the beach. It is 45 minutes through the woods. We ride on the beach 30 minutes where riders have the opportunity to walk, trot and canter along the water's edge. Then we ride 45 minutes back through the woods to the barn.

How many people usually go on a ride?
We can usually accommodate up to 10 riders per trip.

Do you need experience to go horseback riding? Can anybody go horseback riding?
Riders must be at least 10 years of age, 5 ft tall and under 200 lbs and be proportionate in height and weight. We strictly enforce the age requirement for the safety of young riders. We strictly enforce our weight limit for the comfort of our horses and for rider safety. Riders should be in good physical condition - please check with your doctor. However riders of all experience levels are welcome! We have horses for the guest that has never been on a horse and we have horses for the well seasoned horseman or woman. Anyone with knee or back problems, arthritis, or circulation problems should talk to their doctor. If you are terrified because of a previous experience please reconsider riding. Please keep in that refunds are not offered if you decide not to ride at the last minute or cannot complete the ride due to health issues.

Why do you have an age requirement?
SAFETY! My number one priority is keeping everyone safe. I do not have many horses or tack to accomodate children. Our ride is fast past and often times is intimadating to children.

My child is under 10 but has riding experience - can he/she ride?
After many years in business we have found that children under 10 are often intimidated and overwhelmed by the ride. They are riding a strange horse, outside of the ring and with a group of 10 or more horses. We can however be more accommodating in the off season when the group size is smaller.

Can we ride double or share a horse?
Under no circumstance can you ride double or share a horse in any way.

Why do you have a weight limit?
We have a weight limit to be kind to our horses. They have to carry the riders through thick deep sand and it is not fair to them to carry too much weight. We have a weight restriction for rider safety also. We strictly enforce our weight limit with a scale. Be considerate to the horse - don't come riding if you are over the weight limit! 200 is our current limit. We are now using a BMI chart to ensure that riders are proportionate for their height and weight.

What days can we go horseback riding?
During the off-season we are very flexible with our ride times, please call us, and we’ll schedule a ride for you. During the peak summer season, we generally take two rides a day Monday through Saturday. These rides are offered first thing in the morning and late afternoon.

What time do you ride?
In the hot summer months we ride first thing in the morning and then late in the afternoon. The rest of the year when heat is not an issue and the beach is not crowded we can be more flexible with our ride times.

How much does it cost?
The cost of the ride is $95 per person. We accept MC/Visa or cash.

What happens if we miss our ride or have to cancel?
If you cannot make it to your pre-arranged ride, then we require that you give us 24 hours notice for groups less than 5 and 48 hour notice for groups of 5 or more. If you do not notify us within the require time and we cannot fill your spot, your credit card will be charged full price for each rider. I am usually on a waiting list and can fill your spots if you call and let me know.

What time should we arrive at the stables?
When you call to make your reservation we will tell you what time to arrive. We ask that you arrive 10 minutes prior to ride time. Please do not arrive early--we will be busy tacking the horses. Before we ride you will sign waivers, pay, and hear the guide's pre-ride speech.

Can we run with the horses on the beach?
Yes. We allow guests to ride at their ability on the beach. However there are rules and guidelines that you have to follow. Riders should only ride at a pace that they are comfortable and not exceed their abilities.

What are the rules for riding on the beach?
The number one rule is to STAY OFF THE DUNES and OUT OF TURTLE or BIRD NESTING AREAS!!!! These are PARK SERVICE rules that must be strictly adhered too! My rules are based on safety for the you, the riders with you and my horses. The guide will go over all the rules for keeping everyone safe and in the saddle. Please listen to your guide and follow directions.

How long does the ride last?
The ride will last for approximately two hours. However allow 3 hours in your schedule.

What should we wear?
It is recommended that you wear long pants and boots or shoes with a heel so your foot does not slide through. NO FLIP FLOPS. Long sleeve shirts and/or bug spray are also recommended to keep the bugs off.

Do I have to wear a helmet?
We have helmets for every rider. If you are 16 years of age or younger you must wear a helmet.

What happens if it is raining on the day of our ride?
If we have to cancel due to rain, we will call you as soon as possible to cancel the day's ride and reschedule your group for another day. Please plan on riding unless you hear otherwise from us, because it could be pouring down rain where you are and sunny and clear at the stables...Cape Hatteras has very unpredictable weather. Cancellation due to foul weather is at the guides discretion. We will ride if it is sprinkling and not thundering and lightning.

If someone has back trouble or is pregnant - should they ride?
NO!

What if I get scared at the last minute and don't want to ride OR I get scared on the beach and don't want to ride anymore?
We don't want you to ride if you are frightened. Horseback riding should be fun and enjoyable. However we have reserved your horse for you, turned away other riders, tacked up your horse for you, etc therefore we ask that you pay for your ride if you back out or only take part of the ride.

Do you offer refunds if I fall off? If it rains?
No. We do not offer any refunds for any reason other than if we cancel the ride due to weather.

Do you have a children's rate?
Children require additional attention and supervision but we still charge the same as adults.

Do you have off season rates?
Our rates are the same year round. It cost just as much, if not more, to feed the horses in the winter as it does in the summer.

Do you offer any discounts?
We do not offer any discounts for any reason. Feeding and maintaining (farrier, vet, equine dentist etc) horses throughout the year is an expensive endeavor. We have not raised our rate in over 3 years even though the cost of doing business continues to increase every year.

Where are you located?
We are located in Frisco on Hatteras Island. We are located approximately 45 minutes from Rodanthe, 1 hour from Nags Head, 1.5 hours from Kill Devil Hills, 2 hours from Duck/Corolla. If you are traveling from Duck plan to spend the day on Hatteras exploring our island. Please refer to the FYI page for specific directions to the barn.

How do I make a reservation?
Reservations are available online or you can call 252-995-4897 and leave a message with your information. I will return your call within 24 hours. I do not accept reservations by email. Don't miss out - reserve your ride early.

Are gratutites appropriate for the guide?
Our trail guides never expect tips but they are always appreciated. Gratutites are at guest discretion. While you are enjoying your ride your guide is busy answering questions, adjusting tack, taking pictures, picking up dropped items, giving riding instructions and watching out for hazards on the trail and the beach. If your guide has gone out of their way - or just made your ride wonderful - you are welcome to show appreciation with a tip.

The last time I rode a horse I had a bad experience (run away with/fell off/ stepped on etc.) Should I come horseback riding?
Please reconsider riding if you have had a previous bad experience and are worried, nervous or apprehensive about riding.
